What the S&EJ Team does:
Overview
of Social & Environmental Justice Team Responsibilities
and Duties (Draft revision, 5-13-07, pending Board of Trustee
approval)
The Social
and Environmental Justice Team ministers to the congregation
by providing education on justice issues and creating program
opportunities for the congregation to live out our UU Principals
in our own lives and in the larger community, on local, state,
national and global levels.
Specifically
we will:
1. Hold forums
to educate and stimulate interest in social and environmental
justice issues and provide listening space for feedback and new
ideas. Invite speakers from inside and/or outside the congregation
who are knowledgeable about the featured issue.
2. Draft resolutions
on timely political and social justice issues, and continue to
develop and/or improve processes for their consideration and
possible adoption by the congregation.
3. Publicize
approved congregational resolutions when and where appropriate.
4. Create or
download petitions on issues endorsed by the larger denominational
organizations, and/or local agencies that have been endorsed
by the SCVS&EJT.
5. Organize
and/or participate in community Social Justice Events.
6. In accordance
with loose plate guidelines, choose charitable or educational
organizations for recommendation to the board to receive third
Sunday loose plate contributions. Invite and schedule speakers
from the chosen organization to give a three minute overview
of their group’s activities on that Sunday.
7. Provide
assistance, promotion, and organization to individual members
and other UUSCV teams working on social justice activities, when
feasible.
8. Keep a social
justice calendar, record activities, and follow up with articles
in the Flame. Cooperate with Outreach Team when possible to publicize
loose plate donations, forums and other events and speakers.
9. Establish
a S&EJT table to be set up on each Sunday. Stock this table
with information about the activities of the UU denominational
social justice organizations (UUA, UUA Washington Office for
Advocacy, UUSC UULMCA) and their e-links). Encourage membership
and participation. Offer petitions, information and opportunities
for local hands-on activities, related to our Seven Principles.
