"Rev Up with Reverend Ricky" - May 18
If you’re up early on Sunday, come have
a cup of coffee before the worship service. Rev. Ricky will
be at the Starbucks at Orchard Village and Lyons Avenue at around
9 am on May 18. The conversation can be about anything you’re
interested in, spiritual or silly, cosmological or cappuccino.
Come enjoy a beverage and some non-programmed
time with our minister.
Book Club - May 22
The Book Club selection for May is a collection
of short stories by Raymond Carver, a writer with a reputation
of being the premier short story author of the modern era. In
the words of Publishers Weekly, “Carver writes about difficult
attempts at survival in a world where happiness does not arrive
wrapped up in neat packages, but comes in far more peculiar
parcels, if it comes at all.” This will only be the second
time we have talked about a short story collection and it should
be a very good discussion.
The Book Club will meet at Susan and John Cooper’s home
on May 22at 6 pm. As always, you don’t have to read the
book to enjoy good food and conversation about good books. In
this instance, if you don’t read the whole book, try to
read “Cathedral”. If you like to read ahead, the
book for June is Widow of the South. For
more information, send an email to: BookClub@uuofscv.org.
If you purchase books through our UU of
SCV link to Amazon.com the church gets a rebate of between 5% and 8% of your purchase.
See previous Book Club selections.
Guest Musician - May 25
Kim Acuna’s music is a rich complex
blend of original alternative pop-rock, blues, jazz, and an
occasional splash of Latin. Kim’s charismatic talent captures
audiences everywhere she plays, with a voice said to be reminiscent
of k.d. lang and a unique guitar style that brings other guitarists,
in awe, to the front row of her shows for a closer look.
Just-4-Flavor Dinner - May 28
The Just-4-Flavor dining out group will go
to Barbacoa in May. Barbacoa is a Brazilian restaurant located
where Wild Thyme used to be (at McBean and The Old Road). The
ambiance is charming and the food is excellent. Barbacoa is
billed as a steak house but they also have an excellent salad
and vegetable bar for those folks who eschew meat.
Just-4-Flavor will meet at Barbacoa at 6 pm
on May 28. Please let Susan or John know if you are planning
to come so they can make an accurate reservation. For more information
about the group and the May selection, contact Susan or John
Cooper at Just4Fun@uuofscv.org
